Self-Love is Not Selfish

I hope that folks take away from the updated version, this next chapter of myself. It's my perspective on running, having become a mother, having done many more races, becoming plant-based, and of course, joining Peloton. There have been so many amazing updates since the first version came out, but my perspective of how running is still an outlet for me is poignant, and I hope it’s really useful.

I want folks to know how deeply proud I am to be a Latina. Coming from a Cuban and Puerto Rican background and being first gen is woven into everything that I do. I consider how hard my mother, father, and my entire family worked. My mother and father worked to climb mountains, enter doors, and use their voices even when they shook. They climbed so I could start at the top of their mountain. If my starting line is their mountain top, then how dare I not step into my power. This would be disrespecting our day ones.

I'm excited to continue to tell a story that hopefully makes my kids proud. This is an opportunity to reach back to the thousands of ancestors behind us, and pave a path forward that is healing and empowering.

Why I was inspired to write Shut Up and Run…

It was a period in my life when I was completely overwhelmed with all the information that was out there in the running world, with the tech and the gear, and the training plans. Once I got racing and the knowledge under my belt, I realized that I had a story to tell. I wanted to arm Latinas and women everywhere with information and inspiration. I wanted to arm those who maybe didn't see themselves racing, just like I didn't see myself in a lot of the racing literature and press at the time.

Wellness is so important for Latinas. We have such deep-rooted, strong women in Latina families and cultures. Just because we are strong doesn't mean we always want to be strong. We are deserving of softness; we are deserving of peace. And movement is a contributing factor to both of those things. It's crucial for those who are the caregivers in communities, to also take care of themselves. My kids are going to learn how to take care of themselves by watching me. So, I say, self-love is not selfish.
