By Evelyn Brooks

I’m Bella Brooks, born on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2020. From the moment I arrived, I knew I was destined to bring joy to my family in Woodbridge, VA. Treated as the cherished third child in our household, I became the perfect addition when my mommy and siblings longed for another family member. Daddy, however, wasn't keen on the idea of another child, so I, the four-legged bundle of love, filled that role seamlessly.

My arrival coincided with a difficult time for my mommy, who was grappling with severe stress and anxiety due to an overwhelming workload. Following her therapist’s advice to get a therapy dog, I quickly became mommy's best friend and a soothing presence. I’m an extremely friendly, hypoallergenic, easy-to-train, and low-maintenance Cavapoo, fitting perfectly into their lives just as the world was shutting down due to COVID-19.

My palate is as refined as my personality; I adore Peruvian Arroz con Pollo and Peruvian Rotisserie Chicken (and who could blame me?). However, one of my quirks is my obsession with socks. This peculiar habit has landed me in the hospital twice, each time costing over $1500 to remove the ingested socks. Despite these expensive incidents, I continue my sock-eating escapades, although now I either throw them up or pass them naturally.

Remarkably, I am bilingual, understanding both Spanish and English. My love for my mommy is boundless, and I follow her everywhere. Each morning, I’m part of the school drop-off routine, ensuring I don’t get left behind. If I take too long during my morning ritual, mommy might leave without me, a scenario I strive to avoid.

Recently, I discovered the joys of shopping when my family found out that Marshalls in our neighborhood allows dogs. Now, shopping trips include picking up treats or a new toy for me, as I am undoubtedly spoiled. I often sleep with my parents and have a twin-size mattress next to their bed, although I prefer snuggling with them.

When mommy travels for work, I ensure we stay connected through FaceTime. My presence is a calming force, especially during breaks when mommy takes a few minutes to cuddle with me on the couch.

I love the comfort of my home. Past travel experiences to Atlanta, GA, and Williamsburg, VA, were less than ideal, leaving me anxious and acting out when left alone. Consequently, my family now ensures I am never left alone at home.

As mommy's first dog, I hold a special place in her heart. Mommy speaks to me as she does to my siblings, and I understand perfectly when I hear, "BELLA A LA UNA, BELLA A LAS DOS, BELLA A LAS TRES." By the count of three, I’m usually back home, having understood the call to return.

My presence has not only completed our family but has also brought immense joy and comfort to our lives. This cherished Cavapoo exemplifies the bond between humans and their pets, proving that love and loyalty know no boundaries.
